How it works

The technology is the same for all of the DSPA products. With the DSPA-5 however the biggest difference is that the unit is activated manually and is designed to be thrown towards the seat of the fire rather than installed into a room and connected to a fire alarm system.

Upon arrival at the scene, the professional firefighters or trained first responders will carry out their initial risk assessments and, if the circumstances are appropriate, will instruct the use of one or more DSPA-5's. Without the need to enter the structure, the firefighter will pull the cord to activate the DSPA-5 and then throw it towards the seat of the fire. There is a delay of around 10 seconds between pulling the cord and the aerosol activating.

The aerosol is released into the compartment and immediately attacks the flames. Without flames the temperature within the building drops substantially. With the fire contained, the crew can then commit to the building and dampen down any remaining hotspots. Thermal imaging cameras make this attack much easier. This graph shows how effectively and quickly the temperature in a structure is reduced.

Flashover situation
 
When fighting fully developed fires, which can result in flashovers or backdrafts, DSPA-5 will knock down the flames and drop the temperature quickly and efficiently to a manageable level. For firefighters this will mean that the safety when performing an indoor attack will be increased significantly.
